Company History
Eugenio Dumas & Compañía is born in the second half of the 19th century. Héctor J. Bacqué, current president of Héctor J. Bacqué Sociedad de Bolsa S.A., is the direct successor of this original firm.
Back in 1896, Don Luis Bacqué joins Dumas & Cía. Just a short time after that, in the first few years of the last century, he takes over the running of the company due to family links. A while later, Don Alberto Bacqué joins the firm, at that time known as “Luis Bacqué”, as assistant to the trader and then two years later becomes the owner of the share of stock number 40 at the then Mercado de Títulos y Cambios (Securities and Exchange Market), thus setting up Luis & Alberto Bacqué Corredores de Cambio y Títulos S.A.
During his professional career, Don Alberto Bacqué works as member of the Stockbrokers’ Chamber between 1921 and 1928, and later on as Secretary of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange for three periods.
Marcelo Luis Bacqué, Don Alberto Bacqué’s son, gets elected as member of the Stock Exchange Council from 1956 up until 1960 and as regular Trustee in said institution during the periods 1966-67
From 1966 and up to 1982, Jorge Antonio Bacqué, Marcelo Luis Bacqué’s brother, works as Technical Director at the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange and as Secretary at the Arbitration Tribunal. He also takes the position of secretary at the Ibero-American Federation of Stock Exchanges
The main representative of the third generation of brokers, Héctor J. Bacqué starts to work as assistant to the trader in “Bacqué & Cía. S.A.” in 1966. In 1971, at the age of 26, he becomes stockbroker at the Mercado de Valores de Buenos Aires.
From 1976 on, he occupies the position of alternate Director at Mercado de Valores S.A. and then in 1993, he is appointed regular Director.
Later on, he begins to work as Secretary to the board at Mercado de Valores S.A. and member of the Securities Committee at the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange
His long and impressive track record in institutional positions of great responsibility, have gained him his peers´ recognition as well as his appointment in 1995 as President of Mercado de Valores de Buenos Aires, a position he has been holding ever since after successive re-elections.
Bacque’ s firm, as reflected by its three generations of brokers, has shown a great vocation for rendering both financial and institutional services, as well as a deep commitment to the local capital markets.
Right from the last few years of the 19th century into the present, it has shared in the ups and downs of the country’s history and economic development: the crisis in 1890,
the two wars, the paroxysm of the 20´s, the revolution in 1930, the securities collapse in 1949, and of course the financial vicissitudes in the recent crash a few years ago. All these events have not altered the company’s well-known solidity, its high responsibility, its sense of prudence and its well gained prestige in the local markets.
Furthermore, its members have always remained loyal to the professional and ethical values inherited from their elders throughout the long company history.
A few years ago, Ms Chantal Bacqué, a representative of the fourth generation in this family business, joined the company to strengthen even further this long standing commitment to the brokerage activity in Argentina.
